    Uses for Sanitary and Hygienic Pumps

    Sanitary and hygienic pumps are used in a variety of industries including food and beverage (such as dairy), cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Depending on the application, sanitary and hygienic pumps are available with FDA approved materials of construction, and certified 3A and EHEDG designs for hygienic processes.

    Food grade pumps are used to move and transfer flavorings, additives, and other food and beverage ingredients that vary in viscosity. These sanitary pumps are used for processes like bulk transfer, unloading tankers, injecting ingredients, or filling mixing tanks.

    Benefits of Sanitary and Hygienic Pumps

    Sanitary pumps are available with a range of capabilities to convey both high- and low-viscosity substances with minimal shear effect. Sanitary pumps:
    • are designed with polished surfaces and to eliminate crevices where particles could collect
    • ensure product quality in compliance with sanitary standards such as FDA, EHEDG and 3-A
    • allow residue free cleaning for optimal results, such as Clean in Place (CIP), Sterilization in Place (SIP), or Clean out of Place (COP)
    Note: Food grade pumps that designed for sterilization-in-place (SIP) provide sterilization with superheated steam during the cyclic operation of the pump.

    Is There a Difference between Sanitary & Hygienic Pumps?

    The terms sanitary pump and hygienic pump are often used interchangeably, but there are some differences in the materials of construction and the level of hygiene required for the industry.

    Sanitary pumps are designed to meet the specific needs of the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries. They are used to transfer liquid, semi-solid, and paste products and must be easy to clean and disassemble to prevent contamination. These pumps usually have smooth surfaces and rounded edges to minimize crevices and places where bacteria can collect, and are often constructed of stainless steel or other non-toxic materials including copper, bronze, PVC and CPVC.

    Hygienic pumps are designed to meet the high standards of hygiene in various industries. They are similar to sanitary pumps in that they are easy to clean and disassemble to prevent contamination and are constructed of non-toxic materials. However, hygienic pumps are generally considered to be a higher level of sanitary and are used in applications where the highest levels of purity and cleanliness are required. They may be used in aseptic packaging, biotech, biopharmaceuticals, and other ultra-clean environments, and need to meet more stringent regulations.

    For example, in ultra hygienic aseptic processing, a hygienic pump or sterile pump may be used. A commercially thermally sterilized liquid product is packaged into previously sterilized containers under sterile conditions to produce shelf-stable, unrefrigerated products. When selecting a sanitary or hygienic pump, choosing the correct pump type for the process is part of the equation. Sanitary requirements also mean considering the cleaning process, materials, and seal maintenance.
