What Is a Magnetic Drive Pump?

Mag Drive pumps, also known as magnetic drive pumps, are sealless pumps that use a balanced magnetic field to rotate the impeller. A drive magnet and an inner magnet, separated by a rear casing, are connected to an impeller to move fluid through the pump. A magnetic drive pump eliminates the direct drive mechanism of a traditional pump.

Benefits of a Sealless Magnetic Drive Pump

Magnetic drive pumps are by design sealless because there is no direct connection between the impeller and the electric motor shaft. The advantage of this sealless design is that there is no risk of leakage unless the pump casing breaks. Seals are known as one of the leading causes of pump issues and unscheduled shutdowns. Since seals cause the majority of pump failures and unscheduled shutdowns, eliminating seals improves a pump performance and reliability.

Due to their sealless design, magnetic drive pumps are often chosen to prevent fluid leakage, and also to prevent the loss of high cost or potentially dangerous liquids. A magnetic drive pump offers several advantages over mechanically sealed pumps.

  • Reduced overall Life Cycle Cost (LCC) due to minimal maintenance and low overall operating & installation cost
  • Reduced maintenance time replacing seals and dealing with hazardous leaks
  • Potential for zero dangerous emissions
  • No risk of wasting expensive liquid or exposing workers to hazardous, corrosive, toxic, flammable and/or explosive fluids
  • Reliable design with no seals to maintain, reducing time and cost to maintain
  • Reduced risk of fines due to sealless design that helps achieve strict safety and environmental objectives for flammable or hazardous fluids
  • Complete separation of liquid from the pump drive

What Is a Mag Drive Pump Used for?

Magnetic drive pumps are typically used where leakage of the pumped liquid poses a great risk, so it cannot be tolerated, or where liquids are difficult to seal. Mag-drive pumps are ideal for:

  • aggressive or risky liquids
  • exotic materials
  • acids
  • alkalis
  • corrosives
  • pollutants
  • toxics
  • ultra-pure liquids
  • hard-to-seal liquids
  • liquids that can crystallize on seal faces
  • chemicals
  • flammable and hazardous fluids

One important consideration for pump selection is that a mag-drive pump can't run dry without risk of damaging bearings, the magnets, and other parts. For a magnetic drive pump, the pumped liquid is also the lubricant and coolant.

Given the benefits of a mag-drive pump, they are commonly used in many applications, including:

  • Cryogenics
  • Food and beverage
  • Oil, fats, lubricants, cooling liquids
  • Water Treatment
  • Surface Conditioning
  • Photo Processing
  • Tank cleaning
  • Tank to tank transfer
  • Pressure boosting
  • Dosing

Mag Drive Pump Costs

Sealless magnetic drive pumps generally start at a higher price point than mechanically sealed pumps, but the overall lifecycle cost is usually lower due to reduced maintenance. Choosing the best mag-drive pump, in the optimal size and material, will optimize performance.
